For over 10 years, the People Living with HIV (PLHIV) Stigma Index has been gathering important evidence on the stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with HIV.
It is unlike any other research project. People living with HIV are trained to interview people living with HIV to find out how stigma and discrimination impact on their lives. The data that is gathered is used to inform advocacy to end HIV-related stigma and discrimination.
The whole process is designed to strengthen the capacity of networks and groups of people living with HIV, training and supporting them to gather data, conduct evidence-based advocacy, influence policy and programming, and monitor progress towards the elimination of HIV-related stigma and discrimination.
As the HIV epidemic and the global response to it have changed, so has the People Living with HIV Stigma Index – it is now being used to record the stigma and discrimination experienced by people who are marginalised based on gender, gender identity, age, sexuality, occupation in sex work and drug use.
What are we doing?
The PLHIV Stigma Index is managed by an International Partnership, of GNP+, ICW and UNAIDS. On behalf of the partnership, GNP+ provides the research tools, support and guidance needed to teams in countries all over the world as they implement the project.
